The number of computations per second used to secure the Bitcoin network, aka the hashrate, can be hard to visualize. By 2019, a helpful metaphor was conjured when it was reported that the hashrate now equaled 10x the number of grains of sand on earth. For the record, that’s 69 quintillion hashes per second.

You are sitting on a beautiful sandy beach with no one in sight. To the north and south, all you can see is an endless expanse of golden sand. You are struck with the thought: “I wonder how many grains of sand are on this beach?”

This notion prompts you to go further: “Actually, I wonder how many grains of sand are on the entire Earth?”

It’s a number that is too vast to comprehend. Likewise when it comes to envisaging the sheer scale of Bitcoin’s hashpower – the magnitude of its security.

As of today, the Bitcoin network is performing approximately 888 quintillion hash attempts every single second. For the record, it goes: millions, billions, trillions, quadrillions…quintillions. That’s 888,000,000,000,000,000,000 mathematical executions per second in the race to secure and extend the blockchain — a number so large it intimidates the imagination.

To put that in perspective, scientists estimate there are about 7.5 quintillion grains of sand on Earth. Bitcoin’s hashrate per second is more than 100 times greater.

Which means that Bitcoin is now “thinking” more times per second than there are grains of sand beneath our feet.

But this isn’t just about raw speed. Every one of those 888 quintillion hashes per second is a vote — an uncompromising defence of financial sovereignty. Proof-of-work isn’t just how Bitcoin secures transactions; it’s how it proves legitimacy. And the more hashes it throws into the void, the more impossible it becomes to alter its history.

That’s the miracle here: in a world where data is easily rewritten, Bitcoin’s truth is protected by the unrelenting force of mathematics.

Each hash is a guess — kinda like a game of “pick a number between one and ten.” But this numerical range is so vast that even 888 quintillion postulations per second takes about ten minutes to eventually stumble upon the correct number.

Collectively, these guesses form a bulwark against fraud, manipulation, and centralised control. Every moment, this global, decentralised supercomputer mines away, proving that trust doesn’t need middlemen — it just needs math, electricity, and time.

The network has survived price collapses, government bans, exchange implosions, media slander, and environmental crusades. Still, it thrives, constantly growing and proving that the system isn’t just alive – it’s surging. Even in bear markets, the machines keep humming, securing a protocol that refuses to die.

This isn’t just computational theatre — it’s cultural symbolism. In a world where government currencies can be created on a whim, new bitcoin is only mined through unfathomable amounts of work.

What other system has ever been defended by an invisible wall of number-crunching, 100 times greater than all the sand on Earth? What other system can say it’s backed by the one thing that can’t be bribed, lobbied, or compromised — objective computation?

Bitcoin isn’t just secure. It’s stubborn. It doesn’t ask for your belief. It doesn’t need a bailout. It simply exists — and it fights for that existence every ten minutes, forever.

So the next time someone asks you what gives Bitcoin its strength, don’t say hype. Don’t say speculation. Say this:

“Every second, it’s defended by something more vast than the Earth’s sand. Not by men with guns, but by machines with purpose.”

Because in the age of digital tyranny and centralised revision, Bitcoin offers something radical: a truth you can count on — 888 quintillion times a second.
